Back in March, Microsoft launched SharePoint Server 2016 before later releasing the RTM version to the public on May 4, in conjunction with a Future of SharePoint event held in San Francisco which outlined the company's roadmap for the product. The following month, Microsoft released its SharePoint mobile app for iOS before bringing it to Android and Windows Mobile later this year.
Now, Microsoft has released the first major update to SharePoint Server 2016, called 'Feature Pack 1', delivered as part of the November 2016 Public Update and bundles a number of new features, which include:
Administrative actions logging
This feature will help streamline troubleshooting issues related to administrative changes by logging actions undertaken via the central administration website or the management shell.
MinRole enhancements
MinRole helps simplify the deployment process by ensuring that services are operating on the correct servers within a farm, based upon a set of predefined server roles.
OneDrive for Business modern experience
An updated user interface has been introduced into OneDrive for Business, bringing with it a refreshed layout and functionality already found in its Office 365 counterpart. However, this particular feature will require an active software assurance contract at the time of updating to Feature Pack 1, otherwise the feature must be disabled.
Custom tiles
The app launcher, used to access SharePoint and Office 365 services, now includes the ability to add individual SharePoint sites, external sites, legacy apps, or anything accessible via a URL.
OneDrive API
Feature Pack 1 integrates a new API which integrates the ability to access content in OneDrive Personal and OneDrive for Business as well document libraries in SharePoint Online.
Rounding out Feature Pack 1 are two hybrid capabilities which have been made available in preview form.
Hybrid Auditing enables audit logs from on-premises installations of SharePoint 2016 to be collected and uploaded to Office 365 where centralized auditing and reporting functions can be accessed. The second capability, dubbed Hybrid Taxonomy, enables information structures to be deployed across a farm running SharePoint Server 2016 in conjunction with Office 365.
