Microsoft Retools Software Management

Microsoft on Tuesday will announce a new suite intended to make the process of managing server and desktop software easier than it is today.

MS will reveal details of the new product, System Center, during the Microsoft Management Summit in Las Vegas. System Center, which isn't scheduled for release until next year, will combine together two other products: Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 and Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2004.

Rumours that MOM 2004 will do the washing and ironing then tuck you in at night are as yet unconfirmed.

Microsoft also released new details about MOM 2004, a tool for monitoring, managing and evaluating the performance of Windows. The company issued an update to existing version MOM 2000 in January.

System Center "can't be available until MOM 2004 is available in summer of next year," said David Hamilton, director of Microsoft's Enterprise Management division.

System Center will be just one of many topics at the management conference, which unexpectedly sold out. About 1,500 technology executives are expected to attend.
