Windows 10 users began reporting last week that Search on Windows was broken, where clicking on the search box or icon on the taskbar would result in an empty screen. This seemed to be an issue with the server-side of things, and to many people’s surprise, even searching for local files could not be done. While there was a workaround for the issue, it involved tweaking registry entries, something that is always a risk.
Now, an official response on Microsoft Tech Community reiterated a comment that the company posted on their support page, stating that it is indeed aware of the issue and that it has been fixed for most users. While it looks like the response is a verbatim copy of what was posted on 5 February, a comment from the Performance team specifically announcing of the fix might point to the fact that the fix might be resolving the issue for a larger set of customers.
The comment suggests that users that are still facing the issue might have to restart their device for the functionality to begin working as expected. The post on the support page further adds that in rare cases, users might have to end the SearchUI.exe or SearchApp.exe process from the Task Manager. The firm says that it is "working diligently to fully resolve the issue" and that it will provide an update once it is resolved.
This isn’t the first time that there have been issues with Search on Windows. A cumulative update broke the Start Menu and desktop search back in September. The firm went on to claim that the issue was fixed by outright denying the existence of the problem.
