Microsoft's Xbox 360 console sold quite a few consoles in June 2013, but it has been bested this time by a console from Nintendo. Today, Microsoft announced that it sold 140,000 units of its nearly eight year old console in June 2013 in the US. Microsoft claims this is the 30th straight month that the Xbox 360 has outsold all current generation consoles.
The announcement on Xbox Wire also says that in June, a total of $197 million was spent on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories, which Microsoft again claims is more than any other console for the month. However, Nintendo's 3DS portable console actually outsold the Xbox 360 in June. Gamesindustry International reports that, according to the NPD Group, the 3DS sold 225,000 units in the US. It's likely that Microsoft does not compare sales of the Xbox 360 to the portable 3DS.
In any event, the overall retail games industry continue to slump as total US sales went down 15 percent in June to $593.3 million. The top selling game in June was the PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us, followed by the 3DS exclusive Animal Crossing: New Leaf in second place. Microsoft's Xbox 360 exclusive game Minecraft, which was released to retail stores several months after it became a digital download hit, came in third place in game sales in June.
