Minecraft, the hit indie sandbox game that has sold over 5 million copies on the PC, now has a release date for the Xbox 360 version. Microsoft, via the Major Nelson web site, announced that the Xbox 360 Minecraft port will be launched as a downloadable Xbox Live Arcade game on May 9th. The price for the Minecraft Xbox 360 game will be 1600 Microsoft points (about $20), which puts it on the high end of the Xbox Live Arcade price range.
The Xbox 360 port of Minecraft will contain a new crafting interface made for the Xbox 360 console along with a tutorial mode. It will also support split screen multiplayer features, something which the PC version doesn't currently have.
Microsoft first announced its plans to bring Minecraft to the Xbox 360 console at E3 2011. Besides the PC, Minecraft has also been released for Android devices.
Microsoft made the Minecraft announcement as part of its "Arcade NEXT" launch of three other upcoming Xbox Live Arcade titles. The driving game Trials Evolution is due out on April 18th, followed by the combat game Bloodforge on April 25th, both for 1200 Microsoft points each. May 2nd brings the Fable spin-off game Fable Heroes for 800 Microsoft points.
