The Minecraft movie has been a long time coming, having first been rumored all the way back in 2014, when Warner Bros. acquired the rights to make it happen. A couple of years later, we heard that it would be debuting on May 24, 2019, but as you might know, that isn't happening. Last year, the movie lost its director and was indefinitely delayed, but now we know when it's actually coming. Hopefully.
A new post on the official Minecraft website has revealed that the movie is set to debut on March 4, 2022, almost three full years from today. The film will be directed by Peter Sollet, who's previously been in charge of movies such as Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist or Raising Victor Vargas.
As for the plot of the movie, we'll be watching the story of a teenage girl and her group of friends, who will try to save the Overworld from being destroyed by the Ender Dragon. The movie will be a live-action, full-length piece, so it'll be interesting to see how the blocky world of Minecraft transitions to the big screen.
With a release date so far away, it's hard to predict if Minecraft will be relevant to the majority of people when the movie comes out. Movies inspired by videogames aren't usually phenomenal, so it'll be interesting to see if Minecraft can break that trend.
