Motorola has long been a pioneer in the cellular industry; in fact, the company introduced the first cell phone back in 1973, the DynaTAC. It would seem that the Lenovo-owned firm will also be one of the first out of the gate with a smartphone that supports 5G connectivity.
According to a new report from XDA-Developers, Motorola will launch a new 5G Moto Mod alongside of the Moto Z3 Play next week. That means that not only will it add 5G support to the new Z3 Play, but it should work on older Moto Z devices as well, including the original that was announced almost two years ago. The Moto Z lineup is designed with Mods in mind that customers can use on their new devices, so one Mod should work on all of them.
But that's also why Motorola is kind of stuck with a design on the Z-series. When the company introduces the Z3 Play, you'll see it continue with the same size as previous generations, with the pins on the back for Mods. It's also expected to include a Snapdragon 636 chipset, 4GB RAM, 3,000mAh battery, and a 6-inch 18:9 1080p AMOLED screen.
It's unclear if Motorola plans to sell the new Mod right away, or if it will be waiting until there's more carrier support. After all, 5G isn't really available anywhere yet.
