There are lots of Kickstarter projects out there that are trying to raise funds to help launch games. However, the latest such project to appear on the site is a little different. The person who is in charge of this project is Neil Stephenson, the acclaimed science fiction author that is perhaps best known for his novel Snow Crash. Published in 1992, the novel depicted a future version of the Internet and has been cited as becoming highly influential among Internet software and gaming creators.
A few days ago, Stephenson launched his Kickstarter project to help develop CLANG. The proposed game is a PC-based one-on-one fighting game with swordplay. As Stephenson states in his introduction, he is not happy with the way sword fighting has been depicted in other games. He adds:
In the last couple of years, affordable new gear has come on the market that makes it possible to move, and control a swordfighter's actions, in a much more intuitive way than pulling a plastic trigger or pounding a key on a keyboard. So it's time to step back, dump the tired conventions that have grown up around trigger-based sword games, and build something that will enable players to inhabit the mind, body, and world of a real swordfighter.
Stephenson says that the game will have a lot more depth than other such sword fighting games. The plan is to also offer an SDK that would allow others to expand the game to incorporate other fighting styles.
So far, CLANG has raised over $100,000 for its $500,000 goal with 28 more days to go.
