Google is testing a desktop application to take advantage of their Google Voice services. Last November Google aquired Gizmo5, a VoIP provider similar to Skype, which is the backbone of the new desktop app. Even before Google aquired Gizmo5 you could link your Google Voice number to your Gizmo5 account and make free calls to land line phones from your PC.
Google Voice itself was a start-up called GrandCentral which provided you with a single phone number what would ring all your other phones. With this new app you will be able to make and receive calls using your Google Voice number from your desktop.
Google already has a Voice app for Androld and Blackberry Phones and there is a web based version available for other platforms. Google had a Voice app for the iPhone but it was rejected by Apple.
