Microsoft launched its first TV commercial for its Surface Pro tablet during the Grammy Awards on Sunday with lots of dancing and flair. However, that's not the only Surface Pro commercial Microsoft put out in the public airways on Sunday.
Microsoft also aired a second TV ad during the Grammy Awards that put the spotlight on Within Reason, the Alabama-based band that won Microsoft's "Gig of a Lifetime" contest. As part of their prize, the band was flown to Los Angeles to have a performance of one of their songs, "We'll Have It All," filmed for the commercial.
The CBS YouTube channel has also posted up another video that goes behind the scenes of the Within Reason-Surface Pro commercial, as the band members talk about how grateful they feel for the opportunity to have this kind of national exposure. They also talk about the actual filming of the commercial itself, which they said was done on the rooftop of an LA building with lots of crane cameras whipping around.
It goes without saying that the members of the band got free Microsoft Surface tablets as part of their contest win. It should be interesting to see if Within Reason's career takes off as a result of the ad. It's happened before. A year ago, Microsoft's Internet Explorer TV ad used the song "Too Close" by Alex Clare, which went on to be a major mainstream pop hit.
