New Net domains near approval

The agency in charge of administering Internet addresses has entered final negotiations for implementing two new top-level domains, .travel and .post. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on Wednesday said it will begin technical and commercial negotiations to create and run the two new domains, a process that could take months.

ICANN is considering creating 10 top-level domains (TLDs) to augment the nearly 250 current TLDs already in use, from the famous .com TLD to scores of lesser-known country TLDs such as .uk. In addition to .travel and .post, proposals for new TLDs include .xxx, .jobs, .asia and .eu. The status of the eight other applicants is still pending, the group said in a statement.
