Ongoing rumours regarding Nintendo's mysterious new device took another twist today following a suitably cryptic quote from company president Satoru Iwata.
"With [May's games show] E3 as our focus," he said, "we are currently going into the process of exploring what we can have it do with conventional software." He also mentioned that the product would "enable fun and movement not seen before," which makes it sound like some sort of EyeToy-style motion-detecting peripheral.
Earlier comments from Iwata indicated that the device would somehow bridge the gap between hardware and software - although we hope this doesn't just mean that it'll be a new joypad. Ahem. We should know for sure in the next week or so as Nintendo recently announced that a press event will take place in Kyoto, Japan some time between 15-19 January at which they intend to unveil key products due for release over the next 12 months - including, we would imagine, the as-yet unidentified new bit of kit.
Whatever it turns out to be, this year's E3 showing is crucial for Nintendo. Last year's event was something of a debacle for the company. While the announcement of Mario 128 for Gamecube was widely anticipated, Ninty instead announced a new version of Pac-Man.
