Nintendo DS Drives Japanese Market

The latest Japanese sales charts, including the week of the Xbox 360's launch in that country, show the Nintendo DS scoring big thanks to releases such as Mario Kart DS.  In the week covered the DS sold an amazing 299,000 units, which far outpaced its handheld rival, Sony's PSP, which moved only 86,000 units in the same timeframe.

Mario Kart DS dominated the software charts and undoubtedly had a huge impact on the number of DS units sold.  219,000 copies of the online enabled racer were sold, while Animal Crossing: Wild World also did well, moving 121,000 copies.  No Xbox 360 games entered the top 10 in software sales, but that should change with the arrival of Dead or Alive 4, the most anticipated titled for the console in Japan.
