Nokia has announced that it has joined forces with Finland’s Tampere University to create a ‘Center of Excellence’ that will accelerate the introduction of new technologies into its ReefShark chipset portfolio. Another benefit of the Center of Excellence, which is due to open next month, is that it will improve Nokia’s silicon capabilities and its development of proprietary System-on-Chip (SoC) processors.
Commenting on the partnership, Ari Kynaslahti, Head of Product Management at Nokia, said:
“This important collaboration highlights our continued commitment to developing our ReefShark chipset portfolio and ensures that Nokia 5G solutions deliver a best-in-class performance to our customers. We look forward to working closely and collaboratively with Tampere University on this exciting venture.”
The new initiative will help Nokia accelerate the design and manufacture of SoC chipsets and their time-to-market. Additionally, it will help build long-term SoC development competence to put the firm in a better place in the coming years. Through the joint venture, Nokia says it’s also looking to release new chips yearly. The center will also help Nokia explore machine learning, artificial intelligence, and security hardware development.
According to the announcement, Tampere University is set to benefit too. Nokia says it will support the educational institute with future research projects and guide the university with its approach to the education of tomorrow's engineers.
