Nvidia, the American tech giant has partnered up with renowned German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz to develop the most sophisticated and advanced computing architecture ever deployed in an automobile. The announcement came after Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius and Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang met in a live-streamed media event.
In 2024, this novel system will be rolled out across the fleet of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz vehicles. At the heart of the new software-defined architecture will be the Nvidia DRIVE AGX Orin platform, an end-to-end multiprocessing system based on the Nvidia Ampere supercomputing architecture that will enable state-of-the-art automated driving functionalities. Since the system is based on deep neural networks, it develops and improves steadily throughout the years as more and more data is fed into it.
One of the primary features will be the ability to automate journeys on regular routes from address to address. Automated parking of up to level 4 will also be available. What's interesting to note here is that customers will be able to purchase capabilities, software applications, and subscription services through over-the-air (OTA) software updates during the life of the car. This will lead to what the two companies are dubbing as a 'perpetually upgradeable machine'. Obviously, numerous safety and convenience-oriented applications will come bundled in the package as well.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed his excitement at the collaboration between the two industry giants, stating that "This is the biggest partnership of its kind in the transportation industry." And that "Together, we’re going to revolutionize the car ownership experience, making the vehicle software programmable and continuously upgradeable via over-the-air updates." "At no time in history has so much computing power been put into a car," he further added.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said that he was delighted to join hands with Nvidia and envisioned that "This new platform will become an efficient, centralized, and software-defined system in our future Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Nvidia's AI computing architecture will help us streamline our journey towards autonomous driving. These new capabilities and upgrades will be downloaded from the cloud, improving safety, increasing value, and extending the joy of ownership for all Mercedes-Benz customers.”
