Office add-ins are finally coming to the Mac

Office for Mac is about to get much more powerful, as Microsoft is finally making add-ins available to the application suite the firm announced today at day two of its annual Build conference.

Rob Howard, director of Office 365 ecosystem marketing, said that the idea is "Office as a platform", as add-ins are also coming to Android, although there's no ETA for that one.

The firm demoed a Starbucks add-in for Outlook that would allow users to create meetings at Starbucks locations or email gift cards to friends. Outlook extensions were first announced at last year's Build conference and since then, more than 100 extensions have been created for the app.

The firm showed off other add-ins as well, such as Boomerang - which provides a custom ribbon in Outlook for email productivity - and Document Wizard - which offers data-driven Word templates.

Support for add-ins will be coming to Office for Mac in the coming weeks.
