On Friday, yet another Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a game project ended very successfully. The Banner Saga ended up raising $723,886, well ahead of its original $100,000 goal. The game is being developed by Stoic, founded by three former team members from BioWare.
The Banner Saga is described as a "role-playing game merged with turn-based strategy, wrapped into an adventure mini-series about vikings." Yes, there's some ancient Norse culture put in place in in this PC-Mac game combined with the promise of hand-created animations, a complex single player game and multiplayer modes. The game will now be released in December 2012.
Meanwhile, a Kickstarter game project that we reported on last week has been halted well before it was scheduled to end. Police Warfare's Kickstarter proect was launched earlier in April by LA-based Elastic Games, made up of team members who previously worked at Ubisoft, Epic Games, Electronic Arts and Crytek. As the name suggests, the first person shooter is based on taking on criminals as a member of an urban SWAT team.
Now, with over three weeks to go before its planned end, Elastic Games has announced that it has cancelled the Kickstarter campaign prematurely. In a post on the page, Elastic states:
Thank you so much for the incredible response to the game. We're shutting down the Kickstarter account but this is by no means the end of Police Warfare. News will be coming.
It's possible that the game got some funding support via more traditional means, such as a game publisher.
