Prior to 2014, Microsoft's OneNote application was overlooked by most as the brand had been put on the back burner. But in 2014, the tech world saw a resurgence of the application as Microsoft moved to make sure its note taking tool was on every platform and was free for everyone to use too.
It should not be a big surprise then to hear that during 2014, the number of individuals using OneNote doubled when compared to 2013 and 2015 is on track to double 2014's user base.
It's quite obvious that making the app free has significantly boosted the appeal of the tool, especially since there are strong competitors like Evernote that have become popular in the past couple of years who offer a free product too. Also, Microsoft has been pushing OneNote updates out to nearly every platform at a consistent rate and seeing how they are now fully featured on every major OS, this will continue to fuel their growth.
Even though Microsoft does not make any money from OneNote, it does keep users inside the Office ecosystem where the company does generate revenue from Office 365 subscriptions.
