If there is one universal downfall to the iPhone, it’s that it is locked to AT&T for supposedly five years. But contracts in the corporate world, unlike your two year cell phone contract in the US, they change all the time. It’s not uncommon for there to be revisions to the contract over its life and as such, rumors around a CDMA iPhone are becoming harder and harder to ignore.
According to AppleInsider, DigiTimes is reporting that Pegatron has won the contract from Apple to build a CDMA iPhone. It should be noted that DigiTimes doesn’t have a perfect track record with predicting Apple’s upcoming hardware but they have hit some predictions on the head in the past.
Citing this new information about the CDMA iPhone only adds fuel to the fire. Engadget recently put together several sources of information it had received about a CDMA iPhone from insiders who claim to have knowledge of the device's existence.
If having two independent sources wasn’t enough, the Wall Street Journal also chimed in a few weeks ago claiming to have its own information about an upcoming Verizon iPhone. They state that “Apple Inc. plans to begin producing this year a new iPhone that could allow U.S. phone carriers other than AT&T Inc. to sell the iconic gadget, said people briefed by the company.”
It’s probably safe to say that at this point there will be an iPhone coming out in the near future that will work on a carrier other than AT&T. Citing three separate sources, with three different pieces of information, is only adding weight to the idea that the iconic smart phone will break exclusive ties with AT&T well before its five year contract expires.
Contracts change, there are almost always clauses that allow one party to leave the agreement if certain conditions are not met, and with AT&T’s network struggles, Apple may have found a way out.
