Fans of the original Planetside will have something to look forward to next week. The upcoming sequel, Planetside 2, will begin inviting people to participate in Sony Online's closed beta test for the sci-fi MMO sometime next week.
The announcement was made by Sony Online head man John Smedley on his Twitter page earlier this week, who said that the beta would begin either on Monday or Tuesday "barring any unforeseen circumstances." The closed beta invites will first go out to veterans of the original Planetside, and then will expand to more players in the weeks and months ahead.
You can go ahead and register for the beta right now if you want but if you are new to the Planetside franchise, it may be a while before you are picked to join.
Meanwhile, the well known CGI makers at Blur Studio have created a new trailer for Planetside 2. It's pretty cool stuff, even if it doesn't actually show real gameplay footage.
Despite its name, Planetside 2 is more of a remake of the original 2003 game than a true sequel. The title will support up to 2,000 players at once in massive online battles, along with support for land and air vehicles. It will also be a free-to-play game title.
