PS2 breaks sales records

PlayStation 2 sold more than 6.5 million units worldwide during the month spanning Thanksgiving and Christmas, compared to five million units during the same period the previous year, Sony says. Once again Sony has rewritten the book on the console market, breaking nearly every record associated with hardware sales in Japan, North America and Europe.

In the UK, PS2 sales advanced 12 per cent on 2001, helping to make it the biggest year for SCE since PlayStation kicked off in 1995.

According to SCE UK MD Ray Maguire, the launch of two new competitive formats in 2002 gave the success special meaning, and he tipped his hat to the likes of GTA: Vice City and The Getaway. "It is remarkable to think that in just over two years we are half way to achieving what PlayStation did in seven years," he added.

Meanwhile, Microsoft and Nintendo have both claimed the No.2 position, but the latest worldwide data suggests that Nintendo has the upper hand. In the UK though, figures seen by GI.Biz put Xbox well ahead of GameCube.
