Qualcomm has announced its first 5G mobile platform in the 6-series, the Snapdragon 690 5G. The middle-of-the-road platform will enable OEMs to make 5G user experiences even more broadly available around the world.
Cristiano Amon, President of Qualcomm Inc., believes that the Snapdragon 6-series has the potential to make 5G accessible to more than 2 billion smartphone users around the world.
The Snapdragon 690 brings many of the premium mobile experiences from Snapdragon 865 5G to the mid-tier 6-series for the first time - including the 5th Generation Qualcomm AI Engine, 4K HDR video capture, and support for 120Hz display. The 5th generation Qualcomm AI Engine enables smart camera and video, voice translation, advanced AI-based imaging, and AI-enhanced gaming experiences.
Qualcomm claims that the Kryo 560 CPU delivers up to 20% performance improvement and the AI Engine offers more than 70% improvement in AI performance compared to the predecessor.
Smartphones based on Snapdragon 690 are expected to be commercially available in the second half of 2020. Some of the first OEMs/ODMs expected to announce smartphones powered by Snapdragon 690 are HMD Global, LG, Motorola, SHARP, TCL, and Wingtech.
