Fans of the Rainbow Six tactical shooter franchise have reason to celebrate today. Publisher Ubisoft announced it will release Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Patriots. The game, for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms, will be shipping out sometime in 2013. The last game in the series, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, came out in March 2008.
The new game's story premise is one that is definitely on the minds of a lot of people right now. Ubisoft said that Team Rainbow is dealing with a new domestic terrorist threat, the "True Patriots" who claim they want to take the USA back from a government that they feel has been "irrevocably corrupted by greedy politicians and corporate special interests." With both Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street groups protesting about the system of American business and government in real life, this game takes their attitudes and notches it up several fictional steps.
Ubisoft says that the game will also have a number of new and "innovative" co-op and multiplayer modes. Hopefully that's not just the marketing machine talking and that Rainbow Six Patriots actually adds some new ways to experience an online multiplayer match.
Game Informer's print magazine will feature Rainbow Six Patriots as its cover story this month. The magazine's official web site has also posted a video showing over 6 minutes of footage from a very early prototype of the game (keep in mind that's is a prototype and not real footage from the actual game). It's meant to show how the game's single player campaign will differ from the somewhat linear design shown in all those Call of Duty games. It certainly looks promising.
