With Google likely planning to expand its hardware offering significantly at an upcoming product event on Wednesday, it appears that the tech giant may also be ready to announce a new certification program for third-party accessories to give users of their new hardware some extra piece of mind.
The "Made for Google" initiative, which was revealed by 9to5Google through two of its sources, is expected to work in much the way that Apple's "Made for i" (MFi) program works. That system gives third-party accessory makers access to "hardware components, tools, documentation, and technical support,” that then allows the vendors to add Apple-certification logos to their products.
One tipster has told 9to5Google that one of the specific requirements for the Google certification will be "USB-C charging consistency and compliance," although they have not been able to verify the report.
The new compliance program, if it is indeed in the works, could be announced on Wednesday alongside all of Google's new hardware. It is likely that one or two third-party manufacturers have quietly been working in partnership with Google so that their products will already be certified so they can be revealed with the products themselves, or at least as partners in the new Google initiative. It is possible Bose may already be one of them, considering their new wireless headphones have Google Assistant built in.
Obviously, we'll find out more during the live stream, which begins at 9 a.m. PT.
