A report from Kotaku suggests Sony has been approaching its partners about a change to its policy pertaining to nicknames on the PlayStation Network. One of the most requested features for PSN, the ability to change your nickname on the network, may finally be coming.
The report cites three different sources at game developers confirming that the console maker is, indeed, working on the change. A fourth source is even reported to have shared photographic evidence of the same.
PlayStation IDs link a user's account to the nickname directly, and this seems to be a large part of why Sony has dragged its feet on nickname changes when Microsoft has offered the option to Xbox owners for quite a while now. The technical limitation also means that while developers creating new games will be working with the new rules in mind, fixing old multiplayer games may prove to be a difficult task.
The sources in the report did not provide a timeframe for when the feature may be available. Previous statements from Sony executive Shawn Layden indicated that the change could be put into effect by PSX, but the company has since announced it won't be holding the event this year. Hopefully, it will still abide by the above timeline and make the option available to gamers by the end of the year.
