Nintendo today announced a new game mode called River Survival for its upcoming Super Mario Party game which was announced back at E3.
River Survival puts the participating players in the same rowboat as they try to navigate through a river in a limited period of time. This may sound similar to how Mario Party 10 handled progression, which the title was heavily criticized for, but River Survival is an additional game mode that focuses entirely on cooperation, while the main competitive mode remains unaffected.
To get through the river in the required time, players will have to row the boat into balloons scattered throughout the river, entering mini-games which can grant them more time to get to the goal. These mini-games all require that players cooperate to get the best possible result so as to get the highest possible amount of time from completing them. You can get a first look at this game mode in Nintendo's RedCube video (yes, you will probably need to read that again).
Super Mario Party marks the debut of the franchise on the Nintendo Switch and it has some interesting features to capitalize on the hardware, such as the ability to link two systems together to create an extended playground in certain mini-games. The title is coming on October 5, and you can pre-order it on Amazon for $59.99.
