Rumor: HTC Omega for Windows Phone 7 on auction site

Windows Phone 7's big update, known as Mango, still hasn't been officially released as of this writing. However, one of the phones that has been made specifically for that version of the operating system might have gotten loose in the real world before its planned debut. Engagdet reports that a version of HTC Omega, running Windows Phone 7, has reportedly been put up for auction on a web site based in Algeria.

The site has some alleged tech specs for the phone as well. The site claims that the HTC Omega has a Snapdragon-based 1.5 Ghz processor with 512 MB of memory, an 3.8 inch screen, an eight megapixel rear camera, a front facing camera (one of the features that Mango adds for Windows Phone 7) and 8 GB of storage. HTC is expected to officially reveal the Omega smartphone later this week. It's possible that the phone that has been placed on the auction site was a developer phone made to work on future Windows Phone 7 apps.

The next few days could be a big turning point for Windows Phone 7. In addition to HTC, Samsung is also rumored to be announcing new Mango-based Windows Phone 7 devices on September 1. The big product reveal for the operating system is still to come, however. The tech world awaits product announcements from Nokia, which announced its plans to release Windows Phone 7 devices earlier this year. Nokia is basically betting the farm on the success of its Windows Phone 7 products.
