Samsung Electronics has introduced the world's first 1.8-inch hard drive with a 60GB per disk capacity and a 5mm tall form factor as a part of its N-series (which also features 20GB, 30GB and 40GB per disk capacities). The series features a 4,200 RPM spindle speed, a 7.14ms average seek time, a 2MB data buffer and a sound intensity of 1.8 bel – Samsung claims they are among the current quietest 1.8-inch hard drives available. Samsung has achieved 60GB on a single platter via perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology. PMR technology places the data bits perpendicular to the disc, unlike traditional longitudinal recording technology, which can offer a greater storage capacity but reduce the corruption factor as well.
