Samsung Electronics has recently announced that it will acquire cloud provider firm Joyent.
According to the press release by Samsung, the purchase of the said company will help the Korean tech giant fill gaps on its mobile, cloud, and IoT software and services, where it is currently outsourcing through third-party vendors. According to Samsung Electronics Mobile Communications CTO Injong Rhee:
Samsung evaluated a wide range of potential companies in the public and private cloud infrastructure space with a focus on leading-edge scalable technology and talent. In Joyent, we saw an experienced management team with deep domain expertise and a robust cloud technology validated by some of the largest Fortune 500 customers.
Samsung emphasizes that while connected devices have taken an important role in the world today, cloud computing has become an essential part in providing consumers with reliable services on their devices. The company aims to utilize the acquisition to provide a more seamless user experience to millions of its customers.
Furthermore, the technology of Joyent will help Samsung scale its own cloud infrastructure and services. "Joyent’s unique combination of container-native infrastructure, object storage, server-less computing, and Node.js expertise is perfectly suited to help Samsung meet the needs of its customers," the company stated.
Joyent will remain a standalone company, but the acquisition will enable it to reach out to more customers.
Back in February of 2015, Samsung acquired LoopPay, which it rebranded to Samsung Pay, one of the mobile payment systems available today.
