SanDisk's presence at CES 2018 hardly went unnoticed thanks to its prototype for a 1TB flash drive, though the product never came to be. This year, the company owned by Western Digital is even more ambitious, with a 4TB flash drive that still fits in your pocket.
Like last year, this is a prototype product and there's no guarantee that you'll be able to buy anytime soon, if ever. Its status as a traditional flash drive can also be debated, since it does have a small USB Type-C cable to connect to your computer, which makes it somewhat similar to an SSD. Nonetheless, it's impressive to see 4TB of storage in such a small device, and SanDisk claims this is the world's highest-capacity drive of its kind.
SanDisk and its parent company did make some more tangible announcements at CES, though. The My Passport Go is a ruggedized SSD meant for use on the go. It should survive falls up to two meters and comes in two sizes - 512GB or 1TB. It's also available in two different colors, blue and yellow.
The SanDisk brand announced its own toughened SSD in the form of the Extreme SSD Pro, which offers capacities up to 2TB. The more distinctive feature of this offering is the USB 3.1 Gen 2 connector, either via USB Type-C or Type-A, which has much higher transfer speeds.
Lastly, SanDisk also introduced Flashback, a tool that makes a cloud backup of the content of flash drives you own. Unfortunately, it only supports two flash drives, the SanDisk Ultra and the SanDisk Ultra Fit.
