THE MAN who masterminds PR on desktop CPUs for the Intel Corporation has been talking Yamhill-talk to internetnews.com. The wire quotes George Alfs, who isn't related to the River Alph in Coleridge's Kubla Khan, as saying Intel hasn't talked about 64-bit extensions in any of its desktop processors. While, he said, rumours have been "going on" about that for years, Intel hasn't confirmed it.
But, he said, tellingly, Intel thinks about a lot of things and would have to "seriously consider it" and "wait for the right time". What's the right time? George doesn't say. But he does say that he'd rather not speculate about how a move to X86-64 extensions might take place.
