Although the company did not address North America, Sharp has plans to ship Blu-ray Disc recorders for the Japanese market this fall. Starting on October 27, Sharp's basic HDD-less models ($875 to $1,040) for recording television programming to single layer Blu-ray Discs will debut. In December, Sharp will ship higher-end Blu-ray recorders that include hard disk drives with capacities of either 500GB ($1,730) or 1TB ($2,600), and with the ability to write to dual layer media. The 1TB recorder will reportedly be able to store up to 127 hours of high-definition video. With such high prices, Sharp isn't exactly going to put a dent in the DVD recorder market, but the ball has started rolling.
