The popular Shazam online music discovery service has had a Windows Phone app available for some time, but it has only supported Windows Phone 7.x devices. Today, that changed with a new update that brings the app to Windows Phone 8 handsets for the first time.
The free version of the app is now available to download from the Windows Phone Store. In a press release today, Shazam said that Windows Phone 8 device owners can purchase music tracks that have been identified by the app from Microsoft's own Xbox Music or from Nokia Music if the phone is from Nokia's Lumia range.
The design of the app has been updated to allow for larger artwork for tags, along with the ability to place local tags as a tile on the Windows Phone Start screen. In addition to the free version, there's also a new Windows Phone 8 port of the $5.99 Shazam Encore app available for download, which reduces the number of banner ads compared to the free version, along with a way to play tags from the Spotify and Pandora services.
In addition to the Windows Phone apps, Shazam also launched a version made for Windows 8 and RT in late October.
