After bringing the Firaxis-developed Civilization VI to the iPad late last year, Aspyr Media has now managed to port the turn-based strategy title to the iPhone.
Just as was the case with the iPad port, the iPhone version is full-featured, not lacking any features or gameplay elements when compared to the base PC version. There’s multiplayer too, but – just like the iPad version – it’s limited to LAN-only.
As far as cross-play with PC and Mac is concerned, Aspyr simply states “not at this time,” which is exactly what it said for the iPad release, once again implying that it could be a possibility in the future. Rise and Fall expansion is also under consideration, but Aspyr says that it “cannot confirm anything at this time.”
iOS 11.4.1 or newer is required to play the game, and it is officially supported on these iPhone devices:
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone X
It’s worth noting that the newly released iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and Xr, are not yet officially support. Aspyr says that support for them is “coming soon.”
There are several iPhone-specific changes and improvements made to the UI to make the gameplay more intuitive for the platform, and you can read about those in detail at the FAQ page, but those who wish to play with controllers may be disappointed to know that that is not supported.
2K has been busy bringing Civilization VI to more platforms than any other game in the series has ever been on before without compromising on the quality and content; there's even a version coming out for Nintendo Switch on November 16. It's clear that the goal is to introduce the Civilization series to players on new platforms. Android, being the largest mobile platform, is certainly on the table, with Aspyr stating that it is "continuing to evaluate opportunities to bring Civilization VI to other platforms."
Civilization VI on the iPhone is free to download from the App Store and play for up to 60 turns, but to go further players will have to shell out $59.99. However, for a launch offer until October 16, 11:59pm PDT, the game is available at a discounted price of $23.99. Additionally, those who purchased the game on the iPad can unlock the iPhone version for free by opening the app and tapping on the "Restore Purchases" option.
