A report in the Commercial Times quotes senior SIS executives as claiming it will increase its share in the chipset market by over 20 per cent.
That share is based on projected sales of its graphics chipset the Xabre, the piece continues, with 500,000 parts shipping in this quarter compared to 100,000 in the last quarter.
Overall, it estimates that it will produce 183,500 eight-inch wafers during 2002, compared to the 170,500 it originally predicted for the year.
SIS is unusual in that it has its own fabrication plant for its chipsets, although earlier this year it shelved an earlier plan to start building another plant.
The Commercial Times estimates that SIS' total capacity per month is 75,000 a wafers, so it has excess capacity at its current factory.
Other third party chipset manufacturers, apart from Intel, have a so-called fabless chip model. Nvidia, Via, ATI and ALI all produce designs for their semiconductors which are then made by one or other of the different foundries, to order.
Out of the X86 based chipsets it produces, SIS Pentium 4 chipsets account for just over 50 per cent of its total sales
