Snapchat isn't an app known for its gaming-related offerings, but according to a new report, Snap Inc. might be looking to launch its gaming platform this year.
Citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter, The Information claims that games might soon be coming to Snapchat, downloadable via an in-app store. The move makes a lot of sense seeing that there were numerous reports that Snap Inc. had purchased 3D web-based game engine PlayCanvas for an undisclosed amount. The company even launched Snappables a few months ago, which was a collection of AR games.
It is currently unclear if this upcoming gaming platform will leverage AR apps similar to Snappables or if it will offer casual mini-games like those available on Facebook Messenger. One of the sources also went on to say that the firm's gaming efforts seem to be of an experimental nature rather than being a major source of revenue via ads and attracting new users to the platform.
According to the report, at least one major game publisher has already been secured by Snap Inc. , and it is possible that more third-party developers and publishers will be approached with the passage of time and the success of this alleged platform. We'll likely learn more when, and if, this games store launches this fall.
