Sony Corp would be interested in buying the software business of Palm Inc, the largest maker of handheld computers, if it were up for sale, a Web report quoted Sony chief executive Nobuyuki Idei as saying.
In an article posted on its Web site on Tuesday, AlwaysOn (https://www.alwayson-network.com) quoted Idei as saying in January that he wanted to own the software unit of Palm, in which Sony already holds a six percent stake.
The article did not indicate whether Sony, the world's largest consumer electronics company, had approached Palm about purchasing the unit and gave no details about a possible acquisition.
A Sony spokesman said he could not confirm the content of the interview and declined to comment on whether the company was planning to acquire Palm's software business.
