Sony has arguably been much quieter than Microsoft when it comes to discussing details of its upcoming next-generation console, the PlayStation 5. However, the company today shared a teardown video of the disc-based version of the console, showing off all of its internals.
The video starts by showing off the console's ports, including a "Hi-Speed" (presumably 5Gbps) USB Type-A port and a 10Gbps USB Type-C port on the front. On the back, there are two 10Gbps USB Type-A ports, an HDMI port, and the power connector. The video also shows off the console's stand, which can be repurposed to hold the console vertically or horizontally, depending on the user's preference, and that the white side plates can be removed without any tools, revealing the shell underneath.
Beginning the proper teardown, the company shows off the cooling fan, which has a 120mm diameter and a 45mm height. The fan is tall enough that it can draw air in from both sides of the console, which is why there are vents on both sides. Additionally, there's a PCIe Gen 4 M.2 slot for SSD storage expansion, which is easily accessible.
The video shows off more aspects of the console, such as the disc drive and its enclosure, which is designed to be as silent as possible with two layers of insulation. The motherboard itself contains the AMD CPU and GPU based on the company's latest architecture, and Sony is using liquid metal as the conductor between the SoC and the heatsink to improve the thermal performance. There's also 16GB of RAM, and the 828GB SSD, which has a custom controller, promising read speeds up to 5.5GB/s for raw data transfers. The video also reveals that the console uses a 350W power supply.
You can watch the full video above, but you may want to enable the English subtitles, since it is completely spoken in Japanese.
