Speaking in an exclusive interview with Develop magazine, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios said that new hardware in currently in development. Yoshida told the magazine that he wanted developers to add their input into the production of new platforms, adding that the company has gained insight from previous errors in the past.
"When Ken Kutaragi moved on and Kaz Hirai became the president of SCE, the first thing Kaz said was, 'get World Wide Studios in on hardware development'. He wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware, and he demanded SCE people talk to us [developers]."
When asked whether the change in philosophy would have an impact on future PlayStation hardware, the president responded by saying that plans are currently in place."Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven’t yet been talking about in public. Some future platform related activities."
Yoshida concluded the interview by saying that he still believes in Sony’s studio-collaborative philosophy."I’m spending more time on the hardware platform, connecting hardware guys to developers. That’s my major role now, and Move is one of those new ways of developing platforms."
It is speculated that Sony is currently working on a second version of its PlayStation Portable handheld. An announcement for the device is expected anytime between the upcoming GamesCom fair next month, and the Tokyo Games Show in September.
