Sony announced yesterday that it has developed Blu-Ray (BD) disc production technology that will be enable the company to produce Blu-Ray discs at half the cost of DVDs. Instead of using glass plates for production as with DVDs, low-cost silicon plates will be used, attributing to the lower production cost. In addition, the production equipment takes one-fifth of the floor space used for the production of standard DVDs. The equipment will cost approximately 300 million yen ($2.74 million USD), and Sony Disc Technology, a subdivision of Sony, will start accepting production orders this fall.
