Confirming an earlier rumor, Marvel's Avengers developer Crystal Dynamics today announced on the PlayStation Blog that Spider-Man will be joining the heroes roster of its upcoming action game. However, the Wall-Crawler will be a Sony-platform exclusive addition, heading to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 while skipping the Xbox family of consoles and PC.
Spider-Man will debut with an in-game event sometime in early 2021. The look of this Spider-Man version wasn't revealed today, but the studio said that the costume style will be inspired by Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr.'s classic comic books. Just as with other heroes in the game, Avenger's Spidey will arrive with his own skill trees, abilities, gadgets, and fighting style.
Regarding how PlayStation players will be able to upgrade, customize, and build their own version of Spider-Man, Crystal Dynamics said:
Partnering with the Avengers gives Spider-Man complete access to the impressive technology available to the team, such as custom web shooter-based technology from Hank Pym, SHIELD, Stark Industries, and more. And by constructing the perfect gear and skills combinations, you’ll get the chance to live your Super Hero dreams through your ideal Spider-Man.
Marvel's Avengers will launch with Captain America, Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow as playable heroes, and Hawkeye is incoming as the first post-launch character - who won't be exclusive to any platform. The game is slated to launch on current-gen platforms on September 4, with a beta kicking off later this month.
