Spotify begins testing music streaming directly from the Apple Watch app

Spotify launched its app for the Apple Watch back in late 2018, bringing the service to Apple’s wearable device. While barebones, the app did act as a remote control for the phone app, letting users play, pause, skip, and rewind songs right from the Watch. The service was slow to adopt other features such as ‘Hey Siri’ voice activation, which landed on the device earlier this year.

Now, a new report suggests that Spotify is testing the ability to stream music directly from the Apple Watch, without the need to be linked to an iPhone. The capability is supposedly rolling out to just a select set of users. The feature, however, comes with a ‘Beta’ tag, suggesting that it is still in the testing phase.

Additionally, the service lets users stream music and podcasts to not just external speakers, but also from the Watch’s speaker. Users who did receive the feature have taken to Reddit to share some screenshots of the app, adding that the ability to download music on the Apple Watch for offline streaming is currently not available.

The addition of direct streaming on cellular versions of the device will be a welcome addition for Spotify users – something that other offerings, including Apple Music, have featured. It negates the need to carry an iPhone along for streaming music during activities such as runs. Considering that some users have already begun seeing it, regardless of what version of the app or the OS they are on, it should make it to all users sooner rather than later.
