StarCraft II players have been waiting a long time for the first expansion pack to Blizzard's RTS sequel and now they have a date to look forward to. Blizzard announced today that StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm will be released on March 12th, 2013, nearly three years after the main game was launched in July 2010.
The expansion will focus on the bug-like alien Zerg as well as the mysterious StarCraft character Sarah Kerrigan, one of the franchises' most popular figures. Heart of the Swarm will be released in a Standard Edition, both in retail stores and via download, for $39.99.
Blizzard will also release a Digital Deluxe version of the game for $59.99, which will have a number of exclusive in-game items as well as special items for use in Blizzard's two other current games, World of Warcraft and Diablo III.
Finally, the company will release a retail Collector's Edition of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm for $79.99 that will have all of the in-game content of the Digital Deluxe edition, plus some real world extras such as the game's soundtrack on CD, a behind-the-scenes DVD/Blu-Ray, a hardcover art book and a mouse pad with a Zerg design.
