Those folks who claim that PC gaming is dead should take a look at the raw numbers that Valve is able to bring for its Steam software download service. Over the weekend, the stats page for the Steam website showed that at one point, it reached a new record high of just over six million concurrent users.
The specific number on the Steam stat page showed that in the middle of the day on Sunday, there were 6,045,925 people accessing Steam at the same time. This was likely due to the current autumn sales event, where many PC games have received big price cuts. The sale continues through today.
Valve has kept most of its numbers regarding the Steam service a secret, including just how many PC games are sold through Steam. Other services like EA's Origin, GoG.com, GamersGate, GameFly and GameStop have launched PC game download services of their own but Steam is considered to be the biggest by far.
Earlier this year, Valve started offering non-game software for purchase via Steam. However, as of this moment there are just six of those titles available for download, not counting Valve's own Source Filmmaker
