Microsoft today released fresh firmware updates for the original and second-gen Surface Duo. The April 2022 firmware update is a minor release with no new Android version or significant feature changes. Instead, the updates contain Android security fixes and a single bug fix for the first-gen Surface Duo.
Here are the changes in April 2022 firmware update for the original Surface Duo (version 2022.115.10):
- The update addresses scenarios outlined in the Android Security Bulletin — April 2022.
- The update fixes pixelated external display when screen sharing using Miracast.
The update is available on the unlocked Surface Duo, and it requires just a little more than 16MB of free storage.
If you own the second generation of Surface Duo, the April 2022 changelog is even less inspiring than the one for the original Surface Duo. All you get in version 2022.108.8 is general Android security patches:
- The update addresses scenarios outlined in the Android Security Bulletin — April 2022.
April 2022 firmware update for the Surface Duo 2 requires about 28MB of free space. Although the updates contain little to no notable changes, you should remember that you cannot roll back firmware updates on Windows and Android-based Surface devices.
The first and second-gen Surface Duo currently use Android 11, but Google recently confirmed that Microsoft's quirky dual-screen smartphones would get Android 12L. Microsoft so far has been silent regarding upgrading its Android-based Surface smartphones to a newer OS version. Still, it is good to see Microsoft sticking to its promise and delivering monthly firmware updates without delays.
