Microsoft set a goal to become carbon negative by 2030 three years ago, which included its many supply chain partners. However, many of them have increased their use of fossil fuels.

Helion Energy is developing a nuclear fusion power plant, and Microsoft has agreed to be the plant's first customer. It will supply energy of 50 MW or more for the company if it actually works.
In terms of sustainability initiatives, the new steps announced at Inspire 2020 today are specifically aimed at accelerating progress towards Microsoft's goal of being carbon negative by 2030.
