Microsoft has also reportedly flat out banned some gamers who have attempted to upload emulators on Xbox consoles set in retail mode. The use of emulators in developer mode is still allowed.

A group of developers had decided to combine several popular emulators into one single download for Xbox consoles so, in theory, they would be harder to detect and shut down by Microsoft.
While Microsoft used to turn a blind eye to users who installed game emulators on its latest consoles, it has now removed a number of those apps in retail mode from the Xbox Series X and S consoles.
