Team Fortress 2 Engineer Update now available

Valve, the developer behind Team Fortress 2, has rolled out another update for its critically acclaimed first-person shooter. Coming as the last of the class upgrades, the "Engineer Update" will be the last refresh of its kind to be released by the developer.

As with the previous class upgrades, Valve has rolled out the Engineer Update over the course of four days, with new items and maps being announced on each day.

Day 1: The first day of the update saw the start of a contest in which 100 Team Fortress 2 players had a chance receive the highly sought after golden wrench. The blog post announced that the item could be found through in-game crafting over the course of the past week. The "Frontier Justice," a new weapon which replaces the Engineer's shotgun was also part of the update. It features a 50% smaller magazine than the standard shotgun and does not deal out random crits. Instead, the Frontier Justice receives "Revenge Crits," special crits which Engineers get for every kill or assist done by a Sentry Gun. Bonus crits are also given when a Sentry Gun is destroyed.

Day 2: On the second day of the update Valve released "The Wrangler," a new weapon for the Engineer replacing the pistol. The Wrangler allows Engineers the ability to take control of their Sentry Gun, creating a shield around the building that absorbs 66% of all incoming damage. It also gives the Sentry Gun a double firing rate as well as an increased missile launch rate at level 3. However, with The Wrangler equipped, an Engineer-built Sentry Gun will not select targets automatically and will also become inactive for three seconds after a player switches from the item. "Upward," an all-new, Valve-designed Payload Map was also included in the update.

Day 3: The third day of the update saw the release of another payload map, dubbed "Hightower". The "Southern Hospitality," a community-made melee weapon for the Engineer, was made official. The item, which replaces the Engineer’s default wrench, causes opponents to bleed for five seconds. However, the weapon will not deal out random crits and players who wield the item will have a 20% fire vulnerability.

Day 4: The last and final day of the Engineer Update saw the unveiling of the "Gunslinger," a new weapon which replaces the wrench. Players who equip the item will receive an additional 25 hit points to the Engineer's maximum health and every third punch in a series of hits on an enemy will be a guaranteed crit. The weapon also allows for the building of the "Combat Mini-Sentry Gun". The Combat Mini-Sentry Gun has several advantages: it costs only 100 metal to place, constructs at four times the speed of the original Sentry Gun, and is deployed at full health. However, it is neither repairable nor upgradable, as it is intended for short-term use rather than long-term area denial fortification. It also deals only 50% the damage of the original Level 1 Sentry Gun. "Thunder Mountain," an all-new, Valve-designed Payload Map was also included in the update.

Players looking to try out the new features can access the official Neowin server by connecting to IP address and port: 8.9.16.185:27015. The server can also be found by setting the game to filter the tag "Neowin".
