The zombie game genre will be getting another entry later this year, and this time it's a free-to-play PC MMO. Arktos Entertainment Group, who previously published the free-to-play shooter War Inc, has announced plans to launch The War Z with developer Hammerpoint Interactive.
In an interview with IGN, Hammerpoint Interactive Senior Game Designer Eric Nordin said that the game itself is set five years after a zombie apocalypse has hit the planet. However, a year before the game's events, it has been discovered that some of the zombies have stem cells inside that, when extracted, can be used to cure humans of the zombie infection. Players will be able to hunt these special zombies to take out these cells and then sell them in exchange for in-game currency.
Nordin also talks about the playable survivor characters in The War Z:
At start you can create up to five survivors. When you create your survivor, you will select how you want to play the game – in Normal or Hardcore mode. Normal Mode means that once killed your survivor and his personal inventory (backpack) will be unavailable (i.e. locked out) for a certain period of time. Hardcore mode means permadeath -- all of your experience, score, inventory, etc will be lost.
The game is slated to go into closed beta testing later this year and will officially launch by the end of 2012.
