Earlier rumours of the demise of Microsoft's secretive Andromeda may have been exaggerated. The company's head honcho for the Surface business this week raised fans' hopes that the vaunted gadget from the Redmond giant has not been indefinitely put on hold.
Why, then, has the company reportedly delayed it? Panay's statements, without going into specifics, seem to suggest that the tech giant is simply playing it safe, and wants to hit the ball out of the park when it finally unveils what could be its last chance at relevance in the smartphone/mobile market.
Referring to a pocketable Surface device, he stated:
"It’s absolutely my baby. We will invent and we will create when products are right. We can’t bring new categories into the world and not be a place where customers need it."
Later, with respect to form factors, Panay said:
"I think Surface Hub 2 is ready. I think any other form factor you haven’t seen yet we’ve gotta get right, we’ve got to make sure we keep inventing to make it perfect."
Thus, it would seem the report from earlier this year suggesting Andromeda was simply being reworked in a major way, and not dead, was correct. This would also be in line with some more recent discoveries about the fabled device in language packs found on the Microsoft Store. Of course, just because it's alive doesn't mean it's conception is anywhere near; it may be a long time, indeed, before we see Panos' baby take its first steps out into the world.
